Holy One, this is a prayer for my country.
We know that you have no favorites, and that we have made our share of mistakes--some of them terrible ones. But we also know how many souls on this pale blue dot called planet earth have looked to us in hope and admiration as a nation built by immigrants--promising freedom, holding a lamp beside the door that says “Welcome seekers, welcome dreamers, welcome all you “tempest tossed” to a land of opportunity.”
Come here to make your lives better and it will make all of our lives better.
Come here to live in covenant with your neighbor and to obey the rule of law and we will seek the common good together.
Come here to learn how to love your neighbor, not to scapegoat your neighbor.
Come here to earn your keep, but not to cheat or steal.
Come here to give your lives for something bigger than private ambition and conspicuous consumption.
Come here to speak freely, but also to speak the truth.
“For you shall know the truth”, said our teacher Jesus, “and the truth shall set you free.” In the name of the Prince of Peace we pray, and we vote, and we do not give up.
Amen
