f you have been on East Main Street in Norman, you may have seen an area where large numbers of the unhoused congregate. They gather here because of the multitude of services they can receive at Food and Shelter.
This agency has helped house and feed Norman’s homeless population since 1983, expanding over the decades to address an ever-increasing and more complex problem. Currently, they provide everything from rent and utility assistance to help obtaining permanent housing. The Share Center offers food and resources, the Day Shelter has showers and laundry facilities, and the cafeteria offers two hot meals daily.
There is a need for volunteers to help with all these services. The shifts are just a few hours and could be one or two days a month, as one’s schedule allows. Cathy, the Director, asked if our members volunteered with them and expressed the desire for more volunteers. It is something we might consider, as a group.
Additionally, they need clothing items and hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, dental products, or deodorant. The new Share Center offers food items as well as household items and needs donations and volunteers.
